Dead Space (2008)

ESRB Rating:M - Mature Audiences
My Rating:Adults - 18+
Genre:Third Person Shooter / Horror
Platforms:Windows
Fun-O-Meter:
When communication is lost with the USG Ishimura, an interplanetary mining ship, a small group of engineers is dispatched to see what's wrong. They expected a technical problem. Instead, they found a ship filled with insane space zombies.

Brief thoughts: There are a lot of issues with this game's content. The primary mechanic revolves around dismembering space zombies, and the player even witnesses several murders and suicides. On top of this, there is an evil cult that actually worships the zombies.

Dead Space 2

ESRB Rating:M - Mature Audiences
My Rating:Adults - 18+
Genre:Third Person Shooter
Platforms:Windows
Fun-O-Meter:
Dead Space 2 continues the story of Isaac Clarke, one of the unluckiest engineers in video game history. After the events in the first game, he's been left suffering from hallucinations and severe post traumatic stress disorder. To make things worse, another space zombie outbreak is about to occur on Titan Station, forcing him to face the horrors once again.

Brief thoughts: Like the first Dead Space game, the gameplay revolves around dismembering space zombies. This time though you'll also have to deal with zombie children and infants, and the game's story takes a deeper look into the zombie-worshipping cult. In particular, players are shown that it's exploiting its members, much like real life cults.

Deepest Sword

ESRB Rating:NR - Not Rated
My Rating:Ages 13 and up
Genre:Puzzle Platformer
Platforms:MacOSWindows
Fun-O-Meter:
This game is completely free!
You're off to slay a mighty dragon - except your sword may not be long enough to get the job done.

Brief thoughts: Nearly all of the humor in this game revolves around sexual puns, and frankly, that's really all there is to make this game interesting for more than a few minutes.

The Deer God

ESRB Rating:NR - Not Rated
My Rating:Ages 6 and up
Genre:Platformer
Platforms:LinuxMacOSWindows
Fun-O-Meter:
A late night hunting trip goes terribly wrong when a hunter accidentally shoots a faun and angers the mighty Deer god. Now transformed into a deer himself, the hunter must survive long enough to redeem himself and earn the respect of the forest deity.

Brief thoughts: While there are supernatural forces (such as the titular Deer god) and some mild violence, this game's just too unstable to really enjoy.

Demon Hunter: Chronicles from Beyond

ESRB Rating:NR - Not Rated
My Rating:Ages 10 and up
Genre:Hidden Object
Platforms:LinuxMacOSWindows
Fun-O-Meter:
When a famous scientist is murdered, Dawn Harlock suspects that there's more to the story than the newspapers are telling. Her fears are confirmed when she arrives at the scientist's laboratory, and now she must solve the mystery to prevent disaster!

Brief thoughts: While the scary portions of this game have a tendency to come off as silly, the player will need to interact with occult artifacts and eventually banish a demon.

Dig Dog

ESRB Rating:NR - Not Rated
My Rating:Everyone
Genre:Arcade
Platforms:MacOSWindows
Fun-O-Meter:
The title really says it all: this is a game about a dog who digs around in randomly generated worlds in the hopes of finding bones.

Brief thoughts: Similar to older arcade games like Pac-Man or Galaga, characters "pop" when defeated. Other than this, there is nothing to be concerned with in this game.

Dig or Die

ESRB Rating:NR - Not Rated
My Rating:Ages 10 and up
Genre:Survival / Crafting
Platforms:Windows
Fun-O-Meter:
After crash landing on a hostile alien planet, you must make careful use of your time and resources to build a rocket ship that will send you home. But, long before then, you'll need to have prepared defenses to ensure you'll survive the battles that rage throughout the nights.

Brief thoughts: Every night, the aliens enter a mindless rage and try to kill you. While these battles are not graphically depicted, the enraged aliens will sometimes leave behind small pools of blood that you'll need to collect for crafting materials.

The Disney Afternoon Collection

ESRB Rating:E10 - Everyone (Ages 10 and up)
My Rating:Ages 6 and up
Genre:Platformer / Shoot 'em Up
Platforms:Windows
Fun-O-Meter:
This is a collection of six NES games that were based on popular cartoons from the Disney Afternoon programming block. In these games, you'll be helping Scrooge McDuck gather treasure, guiding the Rescue Rangers through two adventures, defending St. Canard as Darkwing Duck, and assisting Baloo as he makes his unusual deliveries aboard the SeaDuck.

Brief thoughts: There is some fairly mild violence, as defeated enemies simply get bounced off the screen.

Also, while Disney's penchant for magical mischief appears to some degree in nearly every title, it stays very tame and never gets more spooky than the cartoons the games were based on.

DLC Quest

ESRB Rating:NR - Not Rated
My Rating:Ages 6 and up
Genre:Platformer / Parody
Platforms:MacOSWindows
Fun-O-Meter:
A lot of games these days seem to be sloppily made, rushed out the door, or so heavily loaded with paywalls and other aggravations that they don't really seem worth it. Enter DLC Quest, a game that takes every possible opportunity to mock and poke fun of every one of these modern frustrations. Of course, there's no actual DLC for this game; everything is "bought" with the coins you find hidden throughout the game's world.

Brief thoughts: There is a very small amount of violence. So little in fact, that warning readers about it seems silly.

Donut County

ESRB Rating:E - Everyone
My Rating:Everyone
Genre:Puzzle
Platforms:MacOSWindows
Fun-O-Meter:
In this quiet puzzle game, you'll use BK's tablet to deliver donuts around the world, meet interesting people, and toss their garbage down the hole. The catch is, BK doesn't really understand the different between garbage and someone's belongings...

Brief thoughts: This game is fairly tame, with the main issue being that a raccoon called BK is dropping people and animals down a portable hole. Despite the long fall, nobody appears to be harmed by this.

Doom (1993)

ESRB Rating:M - Mature Audiences
My Rating:Ages 13 and up
Genre:First Person Shooter
Platforms:MS-DOSLinuxMacOSWindows
Fun-O-Meter:
A free demo is available
Laboratories on the Martian moons were attempting to develop working teleporters, but while they succeeded, the scientists got more than they bargained for -- one of the teleporters malfunctioned, opening a gateway into Hell itself. Now a lone Marine must fight the Hellspawn back through the portal, and stop the invasion from within Hell itself.

Brief thoughts: While there's a lot of violence, gore, and demonic references in this game, it's important to remember that the player is actively trying to contain the forces of Hell, not support them.

Whether this context is enough to excuse the everything else is a matter of opinion.

Doom 2: Hell on Earth

ESRB Rating:M - Mature Audiences
My Rating:Adults - 18+
Genre:First Person Shooter
Platforms:MS-DOSLinuxWindows
Fun-O-Meter:
After returning to Earth, the Marine is met with the horrible fact that the legions of Hell had already breached Earth's security and were in the process of invading the planet. What remained of the human race is fleeing into space, but they need your help to finally stop the invasion and make Hell pay for its evil.

Brief thoughts: Like its predecessor, there's a lot of graphic violence and demonic references in this game, and for the same reason - the player is fighting against an invasion by the forces of Hell.

That said, it's a matter of opinion whether or not this is enough to justify the game's content.

Doom 64

ESRB Rating:M - Mature Audiences
My Rating:Adults - 18+
Genre:First Person Shooter
Platforms:Nintendo 64Windows
Fun-O-Meter:
Years after the events of Doom 2, satellite images show that the demonic horde has started to regroup, with something patching together the dead to create new, "undead demons". As the sole survivor of the original disaster, you're tasked with returning to Mars in order to stop the Hellish invasion once again.

Brief thoughts: This is a pretty graphic game, and like the others in this series, you're fighting against literal demons in an attempt to stop their invasion. Additionally, the forces of Hell created a new evil weapon for this invasion, and the player can use it against them.

Doom 3

ESRB Rating:M - Mature Audiences
My Rating:Adults - 18+
Genre:First Person Shooter / Horror
Platforms:Windows
Fun-O-Meter:
Doom 3 is something of a black sheep in the Doom franchise. It tries hard to retell the original game as a cinematic horror story, but this doesn't work when your protagonist is a heavily armed action hero. Despite the modern tech, the original Doom is still the best version of the game.

Brief thoughts: Once again, players take on the role of a Marine who ends up trying to stop Hell itself from invading our reality. As such, there's a lot of graphic violence and demonic imagery. Of special mention is the final weapon the player will find, which is powered by the souls of defeated demons. Additionally, players now have the option to kill human allies - a first for the series.

Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil

ESRB Rating:M - Mature Audiences
My Rating:Adults - 18+
Genre:First Person Shooter
Platforms:Windows
Fun-O-Meter:
Continuing the story from Doom 3, this has you lead a new Marine through the damaged UAC labs (and later, Hell itself) in an attempt to destroy a powerful artifact that Hell created and seal away the evil for good.

Brief thoughts: This expansion has less gore than the main game, and Hellish imagery is still commonplace, but the biggest issue for Christians will likely be a new item called the Artifact. While the player uses it to thwart the forces of Hell, it was originally made by demons and uses human souls as its fuel source.

Doom 3: BFG Edition

ESRB Rating:M - Mature Audiences
My Rating:Adults - 18+
Genre:First Person Shooter
Platforms:Windows
Fun-O-Meter:
Doom 3 received a lukewarm reception, so it's not surprising that the game was given an updated rerelease. Doom 3: BFG Edition not only fixes some of the bigger issues, it also upgrades the game's graphics and includes a new (if short) campaign.

Brief thoughts: As this is an upgraded version of Doom 3, all of the moral issues found in that game are also present here; they're just nicer to look at. For a quick recap, the player is attempting to stop Hell itself from invading our world, and they're primarily using graphic violence to do it.

DOOM (2016)

ESRB Rating:M - Mature Audiences
My Rating:Adults - 18+
Genre:First Person Shooter
Platforms:Windows
Fun-O-Meter:
Long after the original battle between the Marine and the forces of Hell, the UAC has decided to exploit Hell as a source of energy. This has mostly worked, but eventually someone opted to sabotage the project for their own gain, and Hell broke loose again.

Hilariously, this game continues the story from Doom II: Hell on Earth, effectively retconning the events of Doom 3 and Doom 3: ROE out of the series.

Brief thoughts: Once again, the player character finds themselves fighting tooth and nail to stop Hell itself from invading our reality. This means that there's a LOT of blood and gore, plus plenty of references to Hell and demons.

However, the new Glory Kill system and the brutish way the Marine behaves makes it a lot harder to excuse things, as it definitely looks like we're starting to enjoy the violence a little too much.

Dracula: Love Kills

ESRB Rating:T - Teenagers
My Rating:Ages 13 and up
Genre:Hidden Object
Platforms:Windows
Fun-O-Meter:
Finally awake once again, Dracula learns that another vampire, the self-proclaimed Queen of Vampires, is attempting to take over the world. Angered that an upstart would challenge him, the Count and his loyal henchman Igor begin a journey to put a stop to the evil Queen's ambitions. Things turn personal when Mina Harker is kidnapped, and Dracula finds himself making an alliance with Dr. Van Helsing in order to stop the Queen, save Mina and restore the world.

Brief thoughts: Like most vampire-centric media, this game is saturated with blood, dark imagery, and occult references. Additionally, some of the villainesses wear rather revealing clothing.

On the flip side, sparing your foes is rewarded, and Dracula is playing the role of a romantic hero!

Draw Puzzle

ESRB Rating:NR - Not Rated
My Rating:Everyone
Genre:Puzzle / Other
Platforms:MacOSWindows
Fun-O-Meter:
In this coloring game, you're tasked with connecting dots of varying lengths instead of simply coloring in pixels with a specified color. This can make it a little challenging to earn all three crowns on a puzzle, as you can only make so many mistakes!

Brief thoughts: There's nothing to worry about here, as this is basically a video game version of a coloring book.

Drop the Number

ESRB Rating:E - Everyone
My Rating:Ages 6 and up
Genre:Puzzle
Platforms:Windows
Fun-O-Meter:
This game is free, but contains advertisements
Have you ever played 2048? This game takes that simple concept and mixes it with Tetris styled gameplay, creating a fun new spin on adding up numbered blocks!

Brief thoughts: The only issue with this game is the presence of advertisements and in-game purchases. The former can be permanently removed for a one-time payment of $4.

Ducktales Remastered

ESRB Rating:E - Everyone
My Rating:Ages 6 and up
Genre:Platformer
Platforms:Windows
Fun-O-Meter:
As the name implies, this is a modern remake of the classic Ducktales NES game. A number of improvements have been made to the overall story and level design, but unfortunately, there are also some bugs that make this game something of a bust.

Brief thoughts: Cartoonish violence is used to subdue enemies, but there is a bigger issue - Scrooge's behavior. His greed drives the story, and most of his dialogue consists of insulting the other characters, including friends and family.

Dwarfs?!

ESRB Rating:NR - Not Rated
My Rating:Ages 6 and up
Genre:Real Time Strategy
Platforms:LinuxMacOSWindows
Fun-O-Meter:
This game is completely free!
You rule the roost as the Overseer of a new Dwarf colony. Guide your dwarfs to riches, protect them from dangerous hazards, and fight vicious monsters as you aim for a place on the leaderboards!

Brief thoughts: The biggest concern about this game is that it features fantasy creatures (etc, Dwarfs and Goblins) fighting each other. Everything is shown in a very tame and family friendly way, however.

Dynomite! Deluxe

ESRB Rating:E - Everyone
My Rating:Everyone
Genre:Puzzle
Platforms:Windows
Fun-O-Meter:
Time to crack some eggs! As stacks of colored eggs are lowered down the playfield, you need to toss more eggs at them in an attempt to hit groups of three or more. This knocks them off the stack, and earns you some points - but it could also make Mama angry!

Brief thoughts: The closest thing to objectionable content this game has to offer is that the eggs you're smashing sometimes hatch, but to be very blunt, I get the impression that's not meant to be taken seriously.
