As games have become more complex, developers have attempted to merge features common to role playing games into other genres. These hybrid games are said to be "[insert genre here] with RPG elements". Usually, this means things like stats, leveling up through gaining experience, and elaborate quest lines have been added.
An example of this trend is the Borderlands franchise, as those are first person shooters with RPG elements.
