Quick Definition
Put simply, an RPG or Role Playing Game, is a video game design with mechanics that are similar to the ones found in tabletop role playing games like Dungeons and Dragons. Character have many stats, use equipment to aid their combat abilities, fight monsters in random encounters, and so on. RPGs also have a tendency to have a surprisingly long storyline, often requiring more than fifty hours per playthrough.
Over time, role playing games have developed into several subgenres, the most well known being CRPGs, Action RPGs, MMORPGs, and JRPGs. RPG elements have also been introduced to other genres, creating unique hybrid games.
