Glossary Entry: Flame War

Definition

A flame war is an older term for an online conversation that has devolved into an exchange of insults. The term comes from the practice of calling posted insults flames.

It's generally a good idea to back out of a flame war and drop the subject before anyone says or does something they will regret.

See also Holy wars, which are topics that regularly create flame wars and are best avoided.
