Glossary Entry: Fanservice

Quick Definition

While fanworks are unofficial works made by fans, fanservice refers to the creators of a work including something extra just to please the fans. One popular example is Totaka's Song, a short 19-note tune that sound composer Kazumi Totaka has slipped into many of the games he's been involved with. Finding where the song appears has been something of an easter egg hunt, as it's often hidden somewhere.

Unfortunately, the term fanservice has a negative connotation to it. Part of this is because giving too much attention to fans can derail the current work, but the main reason for the stigma is that it frequently refers to large amounts of unnecessary sexual content.
