Glossary Entry: Expansion Pack

An expansion pack is a set of additional levels, items, and other content for an existing game. These are sold as a separate product, so you'll need to have purchased both the expansion and the game itself in order to use them.

Today, these have been almost completely replaced by DLC, which serves the same purpose.
