A time trial or time attack is a level where the player plays against the clock. In these levels, the player tries to either complete the level before time runs out, or just complete the level quickly enough to earn a high score.
In racing games, the player might be allowed to race against a "ghost" copy of themselves. These ghosts reenact the player's best race, giving them a visible target to play against.
