These are games inside of another game. Minigames are sometimes used to provide the player with a means of earning powerups or other useful items, but they are mainly used to provide an interactive obstacle for the player to overcome.
An example of a minigame used as an obstacle would be a minigame that takes the place of picking a lock. The lock is successfully picked if the player wins the minigame.
