Pronounced "meem", these are best described as the internet's running jokes. Technically, a meme is an idea that spreads itself.

Memes rise and fall in popularity over time, and are frequently tied to the appearance of something amusing and unique. Once the source isn't new and exciting anymore, they'll fade back into the background.

Perhaps the best place to learn about current and past memes is Know Your Meme; though fair warning: there's a lot of swearing and questionable stuff out there.
