Glossary Entry: Map
Definition
A "map" is a single area within a game.
To keep resources free, most video games will only keep the local area in memory. Other areas are discarded or saved to file when they aren't currently in use. As an example, if the player walks into a building, the world outside of the building is removed from memory, while the area inside the building is loaded in.
Alternatively, a "map" can simply be a synonym for a specific level, such as a level in Doom or Heretic. Thus, if players are discussing playing together on different maps, they are simply choosing a level to play.
