Glossary Entry: Lives

Definition

Many games expect the player to fail at least once, so they provide a mechanic that allows them to try a few more times before they meet with a game over. The usual method is to provide the player with a fixed number of chances or "lives".

Each time the player "dies", they lose a life and start the level over. Additional lives can typically be earned by scoring large numbers of points or collecting specific powerups.
