Glossary Entry: Firewall
Definition
Ports on your computer are a possible source of trouble - malicious users and programs can break into your machine by finding open ports and crawling through them. A firewall is a defensive program that blocks unexpected access through your computer's ports.
Note that firewalls block unexpected travel both ways - nothing goes in or out without their knowledge. This keeps anything that snuck in from spreading back out.
