Glossary Entry: Fighting Game
Quick Definition
This is a popular genre of arcade game where the player choses a character, and then attempts to defeat a string of opponents in elaborate one-on-one combat. Most of the time, the game's setting revolves around a tournament or competition of some kind. If the game does feature weapons, they are typically melee weapons only, as the entire genre is essentially a fancy version of Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots.
Popular examples of fighting games include the Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat franchises, as well as the many Capcom vs Fill-in-the-Blank games.
Note: While similar in concept, Fighting games should not be confused with Beat 'em Ups, as their gameplay is very different!
