Glossary Entry: Eldritch Horror
Quick Definition
A staple of cosmic horror, an eldritch horror is a gross, misshapen and twisted creature. They are usually either the distorted servants of a great evil, or they are the great evil themselves.
Eldritch horrors are a special type of monster, as they operate on inhuman and strange logic that defies our ability to understand. In fact, simply seeing one is often enough to drive a person insane, and prolonged exposure to one may result in severe and horrific physical abnormalities.
These creatures are also known as Lovecraftian horrors, after the horror writer H. P. Lovecraft. His works created the basis of cosmic horror as we know it today, and often contained this sort of creature.
