Glossary Entry: Dice Notation

Definition

Also known as common dice notation or RPG dice notation, this is a popular way to describe how many dice and what type of dice should be rolled in a given situation.

The basic method is xdy, where x is the number of dice to roll, and y is the type of dice. For example, 2d6 would refer to rolling two six-sided dice, like you do at the start of your turn in Monopoly or many other board games.

Of course, sometimes people omit the first number if it's just one dice, such as when they roll a d20.
