Glossary Entry: Clone Game

Definition

Clone games are video games that take more than a little inspiration from another title. Sometimes, when there are a lot of games that borrow their mechanics from a specific game without copying it exactly, a new genre is often created.

As an example, shortly after Doom was released, a lot of similar games were developed. At first, they were known as "Doom clones", but eventually they became known as First Person Shooters.
