Glossary Entry: Beta Tester
Quick Definition
A beta tester is someone from outside of the development team that helps them troubleshoot their software by using it during a beta test. In return for their assistance, the beta testers receive various perks, such as early access to the released version of the software and a spot in the project's credits. Many games also give their beta testers special and unique items that only they may use, ensuring they have a special status among their community.
On the downside, beta testers also have to put up with broken and malfunctioning software. A very common issue with beta testing games is that your saves and other game-related data will probably be deleted or rendered unusable when the next patch is released. Basically, if you're going to join a beta test, don't expect everything to be a smooth ride.
