Glossary Entry: AI

Definition

Broadly speaking, AI, or Artificial Intelligence, refers to machines that are capable of making choices based on input. In fictional works, AIs are often treated as just another type of character or person, but real AIs are very far from achieving this level of intelligence.

Characters that are controlled by the computer in video games, such as NPCs and enemies, are an example of how AI is typically seen today.

Note that this is very different from language learning models and generative AI, both of which have been finding their way into search engines and other programs as of late.
