Glossary Entry: Ad-Supported

Definition

Usually, software is either entirely free to use or required to purchase a license. Ad-supported software finds a middle ground by displaying advertising to the user.

This way, the user can use the software for "free", while the developers still get paid for their work.

Note that there is disagreement over whether or not all ad-supported software should be considered adware, which is usually a term reserved for a type of malicious software.
