NES Game Reviews

Overview

For many people (myself included), the Nintendo Entertainment System (also known as the NES) is the go-to game console for retro gaming - after all, many of the gaming industry's most popular franchises got their start on this classic system.

Today, it's quite easy to play these games. The simplest way is to buy them in retro game compilations on Steam or look them up on Nintendo Online, but finding cartridges and compatible consoles is also pretty easy.

Below are the 6 NES games I've reviewed so far. Many of them are still available via a retro collection, so be on the lookout for those. The others were played on an actual game console, as I have a modest collection of NES cartridges and a compatible capture card.

Games in this List

Ducktales

ESRB Rating:NR - Not Rated
My Rating:Everyone
Genre:Platformer
Platforms:NES
Fun-O-Meter:4 out of 5 Stars
Scrooge McDuck is going on a grand, worldwide adventure in search of five priceless relics!

Brief thoughts: At most, you have some levels with a Halloweenish theme. Otherwise, it's very hard to say this is violent enough to worry about.

Mega Man

ESRB Rating:E - Everyone
My Rating:Everyone
Genre:Platform Shooter
Platforms:NES
Fun-O-Meter:4 out of 5 Stars
The maniacal scientist Dr. Wily has reprogrammed six powerful industrial robots in an insane bid to conquer the world - now only Mega Man can stop him!

Brief thoughts: While some characters are humanoid, only robots are harmed in this game.

Super Mario Brothers

ESRB Rating:E - Everyone
My Rating:Everyone
Genre:Platforming
Platforms:NES
Fun-O-Meter:4 out of 5 Stars
In their first grand adventure - but not their first appearance in a game - Mario and Luigi travel through the Mushroom Kingdom in order to rescue Princess Toadstool from the evil King Koopa!

Brief thoughts: You really need to overthink things in order to find anything offensive in this game.

Super Mario Brothers 2

ESRB Rating:E - Everyone
My Rating:Everyone
Genre:Platformer
Platforms:NES
Fun-O-Meter:5 out of 5 Stars
Discovering that Subcon has been taken over by the evil Wart and his minions, Mario and his friends decide to work together to save the day!

Brief thoughts: This is an extremely family friendly game with no serious concerns.

Super Mario Brothers 3

ESRB Rating:E - Everyone
My Rating:Everyone
Genre:Platforming
Platforms:NES
Fun-O-Meter:5 out of 5 Stars
The Koopalings have invaded the Mushroom World, stealing magical wands and turning kings into beasts! It's up to Mario and Luigi to travel through each realm, retrieve the wands, and restore everything to its rightful place!

Brief thoughts: There are some magical elements, but it seems like a stretch to say that this is a serious issue as it never goes beyond what you'd find in a lighthearted fairy tale.

Tetris

ESRB Rating:E - Everyone
My Rating:Everyone
Genre:Puzzle / Skill
Platforms:NES
Fun-O-Meter:5 out of 5 Stars
This classic game about falling tetrominoes and clearing lines is still one of the best! Choose an A Type game to see how long you can keep the play field clean, or pick the much riskier B Type game to try and clear 25 lines at a challenging speed!

Brief thoughts: Simple games rarely have room for anything objectionable.
