Glossary Entry: Pay to Play

Quick Definition

Slang for a game that requires a subscription fee. At first this might sound like a bad thing (after all, if you bought a game, shouldn't you own your copy?), but games that are played online (such as MMOs) require the developers to maintain their own set of hardware and utilities. The subscription fee thus provides the income to pay for the game's upkeep.
